In 2011, Sothea completed his first freelance architectural project, renovating a home on Phnom Penh's riverside.  The homeowner sought to combine two formerly separate apartments into one multi-level home.  The multi-level renovation, as well as adjusting the apartment's entrance, were primary challenges.

A principal source of inspiration in renovating this apartment was its location on Phnom Penh's riverside, with one of the best views in the capital.  The owner requested open views of the Tonlé Sap river from the master suite, the roof deck, and the garden.  Sothea designed the layout of the three bedrooms in order to create enclosed, private living spaces on each level, while ensuring that the outdoor spaces remained welcoming for guests and parties alike.

In 2015, the homeowner sought Sothea's assistance to further renovate the first floor's entry area, storage room, and guardroom, updating them, and transforming them into an additional guest suite.
